I was very surprised at first that it was the closing track. The song itself is very warm, bright and almost euphoric. Those opening/closing riffs are so fun and jammy. Don't get me wrong I love the surreal Deftones lyrics like everyone else but they aren't sufficient to pull off something as bittersweet as this. Lyrically it sounds like Chino is drawing from his emotions rather than "just" painting a fantastical scene. Note how they're never pictured together performing. Probably they put a lot more effort into this one because of COVID. Honestly most Deftones videos seem like afterthoughts. Some really great visuals in the music video. He's in the music video but I can't hear a part by him yet. None of those awkward inhale screams Chino has grown fond of.ĭelgado got fucked over as usual. Especially after Gore.Ĭhino is back to sounding like he recorded in a bathroom (which is a good thing). It's surreal to hear Terry Date's crystal clear production with more modern Deftones songwriting. It's his usual chunky chordal style but he's done something unique with the tools in his toolbox. Within 30 seconds of the first listen I already liked it more than Gore. My thoughts after listening about 10 times:
